It was founded in year 1894 as the Northampton Institute and became a University when the City University was created by Royal Charter in 1966. The Inns of Court SCHOOL OF LAW. Which merged with merged with city in 2001 was established in year 1852. Making it the universities oldest constituent part. City joined the federal university of London on 1september 2016, becoming the part of eighteen colleges and ten research institute. That then made up that University. City has strong link with the City of London and the lord Mayor of London serves as the Universities rector. The university has its main campus in central London in the London Borough of Islington, with additional campus in Islington.

The Council delegates some of its powers to four key bodies: the Senate, Audit and Risk Committee; Remuneration Committee and Corporate Governance and Nominations Committee. It also delegates authority to the President. Each year the Council provides a Corporate Governance Statement which forms part of the Financial Statements and which describes the committees and their work throughout the year. The President is a member of Council and the leader of the University.
