National Service Scheme

NSS is a National Service Scheme. It is an Indian Public Service initiative supported by the Indian Government and run by the Youth and Sports Department. In 1969, 37 universities began this program. At that time there were only 40,000 students in National Service, and the primary aim of the scheme was to promote student personality through community work. Currently, over 3.2 million students are included in NSS. It has spread to 298 colleges and 42 high-school boards. In India, NSS organizes monthly camps, sponsored by the Government of India, wherein volunteers go to a remote community and conduct clean-up, afforestation, marches, stage shows. Doctors may also be invited for routine health checks and free primary care camps. NSS’ key targets are:

  • Developing the skills of volunteers needed for community living and sharing of responsibilities.
  • Gain know-how in organizing engagement in society.
  • Leadership and cooperative habits gained by volunteers.
  • Emergency and natural disaster volunteer endurance production.
  • Volunteers practice honesty and national unity.
  • Know the culture of the volunteers.
  • Realize their partnership with the volunteer group.
  • Identify and engage residents in the needs of the society in which they operate.
  • Social and civic transparency growth for volunteers.
  • Using the expertise to solve the general public’s problems.

“Not me but you” is the NSS slogan. This slogan represents the requirement for selfless service. The slogan stresses the idea that an individual’s welfare depends fundamentally on society’s welfare. The India NSS would also work for the good of society as a whole. The National Service Scheme began on September 24, 1969, and is thus celebrated as an NSS day each year.

Significance of National Service Scheme

The national service scheme has carried out many essential tasks and has achieved successful results. NSS includes the country’s young population, i.e., students in secondary schools and colleges. These young recruits are passionate about the country. For their nation, they should do something. They contribute to improving the country by entering NSS. This contributes to the overall volunteer growth. By engaging in NSS activities, the volunteers gain confidence. You can learn how to prepare to complete a mission. You acquire skills such as public speaking, fundraising, education for others, and so on, even if you fail, you learn from your mistakes. It strengthens their comprehension. People can recognize their problem. They hear about our country’s issues. The social, economic, and political elements of the country are known to you. It is also good for the economy. When they work for improving the people who live just below the norm, they support the growth of the country in very bad living conditions. They talk about critical livelihoods and how their living conditions can be changed. In this way, the nation and the volunteers both benefit.

Regular Exercises of NSS

120 hours of daily work during one academic year are expected by NSS volunteers. The volunteer must stay in permanent contact with the village, slum, or charitable organization. The exercise includes:

Cooperation with voluntary organizations

There are no funds available to the national service scheme for different projects and initiatives in the adopted villages or slums. They must also continue to make contacts with government departments or volunteer organizations. These organizations allow them to carry out their duties.

Village Adoption

The duties of nss volunteers choose or can suggest, adopt a village. The key principle behind a village’s adoption is that the volunteers should concentrate on a single village rather than visiting several villages. If the volunteers visit several cities, they can not carry out all the tasks in a specific region. In this case, efforts and resources would be just wasted since none of the activities is fruitful. The village should be selected in such a way that it has proper leadership, so the questions can be fulfilled there sustainably. The NSS division may be assisted by state agencies to pick the village.

Slum Adoption

The slum must be chosen to be less than big, student-friendly, and free of any political dispute. To comply with NSS volunteers, slum inhabitants should also be agreed upon. Problems should be established, solutions should be created, and awareness raised, as defined in the village adoption. Activities such as water, power, hygiene, sanitation, living standards should be introduced. The activities of adopting slums should be carried out only by highly motivated, trained, adaptable, and professional students, because of their bad condition and position. Volunteers will report on various slums, facilities, living standards, services available, etc.here is an article on What role does NSS play in India?
