The Indian School Certificate Examination (ICSE) board has decided to scrap the confusion about the exams & has declared to cancel the 2020 exams of 10th & 12th students. This is as per the decision taken by the Supreme court today, June 25th. The board has clarified that ICSE exams optional for students & it is been totally canceled, hence no one will appear for the exams.
There is good news for ICSE students, unlike the CBSE board any of the exams won’t be held by the boards, even the pandemic situation subsides. The internal assessment systems will be followed for evaluating the performance of the students & they will be promoted on this basis to a higher class.
Petition
The petition was filed by a city resident, Arvind Tiwari stated that due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases it would be better to cancel the ICSE exams. It also stated that the results should be declared on the basis of internal assessment which had been taken by the schools before the outbreak of a pandemic. Parents of students, who had filed the petition, told the Supreme Court that several entrance exams are also pending and sought an intervention.
Maharashtra government also stated that holding of exams in this situation is not viable. Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni, appearing for the state told a division of the bench chief justice Dipankar Datta & Justice S. S. Shinde that the disaster management committee & others held the meeting on Tuesday where it was decided not to permit ICSE to conduct exams.
Kumbhakoni told the court, it won’t be possible to conduct exams during this Covid-19 pandemic & hence they should declare the cancellation of ICSE board exams of 10th & 12th students.
ICSE board decision
ICSE board has told all the afflicted schools to contact the students of 10th & 12th & inform them about the decision take by the ICSE board & also inform them that they will be evaluated on the basis of internal assessment.
Seeking a clarification on the new academic year, the Supreme Court said that it can start in September only if board results are announced in August. The ICSE said that students can apply for internal assessment and results will be announced soon. The board also said that the academic year will be shifted for the 2020-21 session.
Earlier decisions
Before filing the petition in the Bombay High court, stating the cancellation of ICSE board exams, it was decided to allow students to opt for either of the options whether they want to appear for exams or they will prefer evaluation on internal assessment. Then the ICSE board said to all the afflicted schools to contact the students of the 10th & 12th class & make a report on the options chosen by the students. The report had two columns, whether the students want to appear for exams or want an evaluation based on internal assessment. Students had to submit their choice until the 22nd of June. Then the exams would be conducted from 1st July to 15th July.
Senior Adv Jaideep Gupta appearing on behalf of the ICSE Board informed the court that CISCE in the principal agrees with CBSE’s formula and will provide more details about the further course of action soon.
These exams were postponed due to the Covid-19 lockdown & were scheduled in July. Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) had said that it will hold the ICSE & ISC exams for all the remaining subjects & that no examination will be canceled. hence they should declare the cancellation of ICSE board exams of 10th & 12th students.
