The Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata was established through a resolution adopted by the Syndicate of the University of Calcutta on April 25, 1953.
Visionary Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, was the first President of the Board of Governors and Prof D.K Sanyal was the first Director of the Institute.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, laid the foundation stone of IISWBM - India's first institute to introduce a program on management education.It was the culmination of the joint initiative taken by the University of Calcutta, the Government of West Bengal, the Government of India and the captains of industry to set up, for the first time, a management education Institute in India, a concept alien to many in the educational fraternity at that time.Dr. Jehangir Gandhy, Chairman, All India Board of Technical Studies in Management, Union Ministry of Education, who could not be present at the inaugural ceremony, sent a message saying 'I am glad that the All India Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management is inaugurating today Business Management Course for the first time in India for the benefit of Junior Business Executives'.

The Institute, after its establishment, started offering a Diploma Course in Social Work (Labour Welfare), which was previously administered by the University of Calcutta. Diploma holders from IISWBM were considered for appointment as Personnel Officers in Business Organizations as per guidelines issued by the Government of India. All India Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management is inaugurating today Business Management Course for the first time in India for the benefit of Junior Business Executives'.

Greetings from IISWBM! Founded in the year 1953, IISWBM holds the pride of being the first premier B-School in South-East Asia. The Institute has the unique distinction of having its postage stamp released by the Government of India, Department of Post to commemorate its Golden Jubilee on 25th April 2004 in New Delhi.We at IISWBM, consider it imperative that the facts, procedures, processes, and rules of thumb of business are as crucial to the future success of our students as are the Soft Skills. As part of Corporate Relations, Industry Leaders/Senior Alumni are invited to address the students and to share their valuable experiences/caselet on a regular basis. The focus of Corporate Relations & Placement Cell is to create strong partnership with industry/business and introduce innovative practices starting from students Internship in the first year followed by robust career counseling-cum-placement assistance. Alumni Relations & Networking is also managed by the cell.
The hostel has fully furnished rooms with attached bathrooms (2-seater and 3-seater), canteen, large dining hall furnished to accommodate 32 diners at a time, kitchen, common living area fitted with LCD TV, terrace, microwave ovens, refrigerator, water coolers and purifiers, ironing table, irons, recreational facilities like carom etc. and professional round the clock security services.
