History and Evolution of IITs

  • The history and evolution of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is a story of visionary planning and relentless dedication to engineering and technological education. It began in post-independence India when the nation was seeking to strengthen its technical and scientific capabilities.
  • The first IIT, IIT Kharagpur, was established in 1951 as part of a collaboration between the Indian government and several foreign institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. These institutions aimed to foster indigenous technical expertise to support India’s industrial and technological growth.

Bachelor of Technology B. Tech is a common undergraduate degree for IIT enrolment students. This B. Tech course is a 4-year program where students are divided into different departments. In this degree, the departments are Physics, Chemistry, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, etc. These are known as the most common department of IIT courses. The students must have these compulsory courses for their department and compulsory courses help them to complete their subjective course.

In the postgraduate program, different criteria are available which are Postgraduate Diplomas and Master Degrees, Bachelor Masters Dual Degrees and Doctoral. This IIT offers the maximum offer to postgraduate programs like Masters of Business Administration – MBA, Master of Technology MTech, and Master of Science MSc. Along with that, IIT offers an unconventional MTech and BTech integrated and educational program, for Dual-Degree. This integrates some postgraduate and undergraduate studies which are used for specialization. The Doctoral degree is also being offered by IIT and that is the Doctoral Educational Program

The Process For IIT Admission

  • Candidates must receive at least a 75% overall passing grade in their PCM board exams for major topics. Depending on the reservation, the credentials frequently change. The National Testing Agency (NTA) administers the JEE tests (JEE Main and JEE Advanced). The JEE Mains scores have no bearing on a candidate’s rank for admission to an IIT, as the entire ranking is based on the JEE Advanced test scores.
  • The counselling is done through JOSA and follows the rank and preference system just like in JAC-Delhi. If they are seeking admission to an IIT, the applicants must confirm their seats for a specific amount of time.
