Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, was established on 20 October 1995 by an Act of the Legislature of the State of Haryana. It was formally inaugurated on 1 November 1995. It is named after Guru Jambheshwar Ji Maharaj, a saint environmentalist of the 15th century.

The entire university has a very well infrastructure. The Department of physics is housed in a well-furnished, fully Wi-Fi equipped four-story new building in the GJUST campus. The classrooms and laboratories for each course are well equipped and spacious (kindly visit the departmental gallery). The teaching staff of the department is provided with separate seating rooms and laboratories to pursue their research work. Over the years, many specialized labs/facilities have been developed in the department (apart from the common facilities provided by the university) which include modern photonics and optics labs, XRD facility, Thin-film lab, Ion Assisted Vacuum Deposition Plant, etc.
The dynamic and vibrant ambiance of the department is further enriched by, round year activities of the Physics association of the department. The academic activities (workshops, colloquiums, quiz, poster making, and many others), cultural activities, and sports activities are regularly held in which students and faculties participate enthusiastically. A wall magazine with regular updates is also maintained by members of the physics association.
