NID (National Institute of Design) is a premier design institute in India, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields of design such as industrial design, communication design, textile and apparel design, etc. The admission process for the academic year 2023-24 is yet to be announced by the institute. However, based on the previous year’s admission process, the following information can be provided:
How to fill NID Application Form
The National Institute of Design (NID) application form can be filled online on the official website of NID. Here are the steps to fill the NID application form:
Step 1: Registration
- Visit the official website of NID (www.nid.edu) and click on the ‘Admissions’ tab.
- Click on the link for the program you want to apply for (B.Des or M.Des).
- Click on the ‘Apply Online’ link.
- Register by providing your email id, name, and date of birth. You will receive an email with your login details.
Step 2: Fill Application Form
- Login to the NID application portal using your email id and password.
- Fill in your personal details, academic details, and contact information.
- Choose your exam center preference.
- Upload your photograph and signature as per the specifications mentioned in the application form.
Step 3: Pay Application Fee
- Pay the application fee through online mode using a credit/debit card or net banking. The application fee for general category candidates is Rs. 3000/- and for SC/ST/PwD category candidates is Rs. 1500/-.
Step 4: Submit Application Form
- Check all the details entered in the application form before submitting it.
- After verifying, click on the ‘Submit’ button to submit the application form.
- Take a printout of the application form and keep it for future reference.
Note: The candidates must ensure that all the details entered in the application form are correct and as per the instructions mentioned in the prospectus. Any discrepancies found in the application form may lead to the rejection of the application.
Syllabus NID
The syllabus for the National Institute of Design (NID) entrance exam is designed to test the candidate’s design aptitude, creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills. The syllabus is different for the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and Master of Design (M.Des) programs. Here is the syllabus for both the programs:
B.Des program:

The Design Aptitude Test (DAT) for both B.Des and M.Des programs consists of two parts – Part A and Part B. Part A of DAT for B.Des and M.Des programs includes multiple-choice questions, and Part B includes subjective questions.
For the B.Des program, Part B of DAT includes questions on sketching, drawing, and visualization skills. For the M.Des program, Part B of DAT includes questions on visualization and problem-solving skills.
Exam pattern NID
The National Institute of Design (NID) entrance exam consists of two parts – Design Aptitude Test (DAT) and Studio Test/Interview. The exam pattern for both the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and Master of Design (M.Des) programs is as follows:
DAT Exam Pattern:
- Part A: This section consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) with no negative marking. It tests the candidate’s knowledge of various design aspects such as visual perception, creativity, communication skills, etc. The duration of Part A is 1 hour and 15 minutes for the B.Des program and 1 hour and 30 minutes for the M.Des program.
- Part B: This section consists of subjective questions to test the candidate’s drawing, sketching, and visualization skills. The duration of Part B is 2 hours for the B.Des program and 2 hours and 30 minutes for the M.Des program.
Studio Test/Interview:
- The candidates who qualify for DAT will be shortlisted for the Studio Test/Interview. The Studio Test/Interview is conducted to assess the candidate’s ability to work in a group, observe and analyze things, and come up with creative solutions.
The final selection of the candidates is based on their performance in DAT and Studio Test/Interview.
The NID entrance exam is a pen and paper-based test, and the candidates are advised to carry their own drawing and sketching material. The exam is conducted in English, and the candidates are not allowed to use calculators or any other electronic devices during the exam.
The candidates are advised to go through the previous year’s question papers and practice using sample papers to understand the exam pattern and syllabus.
Eligibility Criteria For NID Exam
The eligibility criteria for the National Institute of Design (NID) entrance exam vary for the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and Master of Design (M.Des) programs. The eligibility criteria for both the programs are as follows:
For B.Des program:
- The candidate must have passed or will be appearing for the Class 12 examination in any stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts/Humanities) from any recognized board such as CBSE, ISC, or State Board.
- The maximum age limit for the General category candidates is 20 years as on 30 June 2023. For Reserved category candidates (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD), the maximum age limit is 23 years as on 30 June 2023.
For M.Des program:
- The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree of minimum 4-year duration in any specialization after 10+2 from any recognized university or institute.
- The candidate who has passed the Bachelor’s degree program in the pattern of 10+2+3 is also eligible to apply.
- There is no age limit for the M.Des program.
Note: The candidates who are appearing for the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply for the NID entrance exam. However, they have to submit their final result before the admission process.
The eligibility criteria are subject to change as per the regulations of NID. The candidates are advised to check the official website of NID for the latest updates on eligibility criteria before applying for the exam.
NID 2023 Accepting Colleges
The National Institute of Design (NID) is a premier design institute in India with campuses in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Bengaluru, and Kurukshetra. The NID entrance exam is conducted for admission to the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and Master of Design (M.Des) programs offered by these campuses.
The colleges accepting NID 2023 score for admission are as follows:
- National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad
- National Institute of Design (NID), Gandhinagar
- National Institute of Design (NID), Bengaluru
- National Institute of Design (NID), Kurukshetra
The NID entrance exam score is accepted only for admission to these campuses. The candidates have to fill the separate application forms for each campus while applying for admission.
Apart from the NID campuses, some other colleges also offer design courses. However, the admission to these colleges is not based on the NID entrance exam score. The candidates have to appear for the respective entrance exams conducted by these colleges.
