All you need to know about Delhi University’s B.Sc. Programme

Established in the year 1922, Delhi University is one of the most prestigious universities in India. It is UGC approved and has been graded A+ by NAAC. It has been ranked 20th best university by NIRF. The university has been ranked number 1 by ‘India Today’ and ‘The Week’ for Science stream (B.Sc).  Since its inception, the university has grown into one of the country’s largest educational institutions with more than 80 academic departments, 16 faculties, over 7 lakh students and many colleges affiliated to it.

The University of Delhi has been ranked among the top 500 universities in the world in ‘QS World Universities Ranking’ in 2020. Also, QS World Rankings ranked it 42 among BRICS nations and 62 in Asia in the year 2019.

Delhi

It is a public institution which is spread across two campuses in Delhi- South Campus and North Campus. The university also holds the membership of several well-reputed organizations such as Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and Universities 21.

It offers the following undergraduate courses in the Science stream

The courses mentioned above are only some of the B.Sc. courses offered by the university. There are many other streams including Statistics, Biomedical Science, Food Technology, Geology, Polymer Science, Home Science, etc in which Bachelor of Science course is offered to the students.

The duration of these undergraduate courses is usually 3 to 4 years. The fee differs according to the programme the student opts for.

Eligibility criteria

It is considered highly difficult to secure admission in the university. The admission to B.Sc. programme is merit-based and subjected to cut-off marks announced by the university. The student must have secured a minimum of 55% in class 12th from a recognized board in the Science stream to be eligible for admission. It is also mandatory for the student to have scored at least 50% in English as a compulsory subject.

The admission, however, depends on the total marks of the student in the best four subjects (one language and 3 electives).

Admission Criteria

Register Online- Interested candidates need to register online and fill in the required information like personal details, the preferred course, the category, etc. Candidates need to pay a non-refundable online registration fee without which the application would not be submitted for further process.

Application Fees- The application fee differs depending on the category of the candidate. Usually, it is Rs. 100 for General and OBC category and Rs. 50 for SC/ST/PwD category candidates. For those applying through Sports or ECA quota, the application fee is Rs. 100.

Course and College Selection- Cut-off list is then published on the university’s website for each course, college and reservation category. Candidates who meet the requisite cut-offs have to select the desired course and college on Delhi University’s admission portal.

Document Verification

Candidates need to get the following documents verified by the college they choose based on the cut-offs announced:

  • Class 10th Mark sheet
  • Class 10th Board Exam Certificate
  • Class 12th Mark sheet
  • Character Certificate
  • Class 12th Provisional Certificate/ Original Certificate
  • Caste Certificate (for SC/ST/OBC/PwD categories)
  • Transfer Certificate
  • Migration Certificate
  • At least two passport size photographs

Candidates should carry original documents, as well as two sets of self, attested Xerox copies of each of the above-mentioned documents.

Final Selection

The list of selected candidates would then be displayed on the DU admission portal. Admission gets confirmed only when the online admission fee is paid within the given time period.

Scholarships

Various merit-based and need-based scholarships such as National Scholarship (Zoology), AIPGS, National Scholarship (Economics) UPGS, etc  are awarded to the deserving students by the university. Scholarships are subject to good conduct in the classroom, regular attendance and satisfactory performance in academics.

B.Sc

Placements

The University has the Central Placement Cell (CPC) that strives to get students placed in reputed and well-established corporations, MNCs and government organizations. All the students registered with CPC can take part in the placement process to get jobs. In the academic year 2018-19, 90% of the students registered with CPC got placed in well-known firms across the county and abroad.

Delhi B.Sc

Top MNCs such as Amazon, Infosys, Indigo Airlines, British Telecom, Wipro, AIG, American Express, Tech Mahindra, etc visit the University for Placements. These companies offer packages ranging from Rs. 14 LPA to Rs. 37 LPA. The average CTC of the students is 7 LPA.

The highest placement package recorded in the year 2019 was Rs. 37.7 Lakh per Annum by a student of Lady Shri Ram College for Women.

Courses such as BCom (Honours), BA Economics (Honours) and BSc Computer Science usually bag the highest number of offers at all affiliated colleges of Delhi University.
