Punjab University is a collegiate central as well as state university located in the Union Territory, Chandigarh. It is one of the biggest and well-ranked universities in the country. The residential campus is spread over 550 acres in Sectors 14 and 25 of Chandigarh with administrative buildings, academic buildings, health care centres, sports complexes, hostels, and residential housing. The university has bagged 2nd Rank in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) amongst Indian Universities declared by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India in 2020. It has been ranked 4th amongst Indian institutes/ universities by International Ranking Agency, the Times Higher Education (WUR) in 2019-2020. The university has 78 teaching and research departments and 15 centers for teaching and research at the main campus. 188 colleges, spread over Punjab are affiliated to Punjab University, Chandigarh with 6 Constituent colleges.
The university offers courses in Management, Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Work, Mass Communication, Photography, Human Rights, Health, Family Welfare, Computer Applications, Disaster Management, Civil Services, Corporate Security, Safety and Fire Management, Hotel and Catering, Tourism and Travel Management.
Punjab university stood 44th in NIRF 2020 rankings and has NAAC ‘A’ Accreditation. The campus has eighteen hostels, including eight for men, eleven for women including a Working Women Hostel, a hostel for sports students and international students. It has a five-storey impressive library with seating of around 500 people with over 6.4 lakh publications, internet and e-books facilities too. The sports complex has a Badminton Court, a Cricket Ground, a Football Ground, a Swimming Pool, a Tennis court, Hockey ground, Volleyball court, Kabaddi court, Shooting Range, Weight Lifting area, Judo and Wrestling Court. A shopping centre, health centre, hospital, gymnasium, bank, post office, auditorium, computer lab, chemistry lab and a physics lab are within the campus.

The university has an Arts and Photography Club, Music Club, Dramatics Club, Speakers Association and Study Circle, Projection and Design Club, Rotaract Club, Communication, Information and Media Cell, English Editorial Board, Entrepreneurship and Incubation Cell, Hindi Editorial Board, Punjabi Editorial Board, and a Student Counselling Cell. perfect and Annual Honors Ceremony is its main annual event. Both NSS and NCC (Army Wing) are available in the college. The university has four museums, the Department of Indian Theatre and its own theatre lab. The Students’ Centre is the hub for student activities.
The Indian Council for Social Science Research has set up its north-western Regional Centre on the campus. The university has been recognised by the UGC as the “University with Potential for Excellence in Biomedical Sciences” with facilities for Stem Cell Research and Drug Development.
The university offers different courses as discussed earlier. The basic BA and B.Sc. courses may cost around 30,000 for three years while BA with B.Ed. costs 1.20 lakhs and BA with LLB costs 3.55 lakhs for five years. The BE course in the university costs around 3.5 lakhs BE along with MBA costs around 5 lakhs.

The college also provides scholarships for SC/ST category, girls students belonging to specific caste, and students with disabilities. Center-funded Scholarships are also available in the college.
PU takes admissions for BA, B.Sc., BA+B.Ed., and other similar courses based on a recognized board merit list. For admissions in BE courses, it relies on JEE Mains results, and similarly, for medical ones, admissions are given on the NEET scores.
The placement record is also great at the campus with the highest CTC of 53 lakhs and an average of 11.78 lakhs per annum. The top recruiters are Reliance, TCS, Vedanta, Vardhman, Union Bank of Switzerland, SBI, Mahindra & Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Indian Oil, Bharti Airtel, and many more.
