Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, formerly named as University of Roorkee and Thomason College of Civil Engineering is the first and the oldest technical university in the continent. It is a public technical and research university that was given the status of an IIT in 2001. The Uttarakhand-based university has 22 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Management programs with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education and research.
Internationally, IIT Roorkee was ranked 387 in the QS World University Rankings of 2021, 90 in Asia in 2020, and 47 among BRICS nations in 2019. It was ranked 501-600 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2020, and 58 in Emerging Economies University Rankings in 2020. In India, it ranked sixth among engineering colleges by NIRF in 2020 and ninth overall. It has also been ranked 5th among engineering colleges in India in 2019 by The Week. The Department of Management Studies ranked 12th among management schools in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.
The 365-acre main campus is combined with a 25-acre separate campus in Saharanpur which offers courses in Polymer Science, Process Engineering, Paper Technology & Packaging Technology. In addition to this, a new 10-acre campus has been established in Greater Noida, which has 16 lecture rooms, software laboratories, faculty offices, a library, and a computer center.
IIT Roorkee has 10 boys’ hostels, 3 girls’ hostels, and 6 hostels for married candidates. All the hostels have basic amenities like cyber cafes, gyms, Wi-Fi, water purifiers, common room, recreation room, mess, TV, laundry services, security, and surveillance system, etc. The rich library has a collection of more than 3,20,000 documents, CD-ROMs, Online databases, audio-video material, standards, specifications, theses, reports, etc. It also has access to more than 8000 electronic journals. The campus has many cafeterias. Apart from the all-night canteens, which are present in each hostel, there are 3 major cafes on campus, namely Nescafe, Alpahar, and the University Canteen which provide quality food at reasonable prices. The campus also has an auditorium, conference rooms, seminar halls, gym, convenience store, computer center, railway reservation center, student activity center, civil engineering lab, chemistry lab, computer lab, electrical lab, electronics lab, mechanical lab, hospital, and medical facility, wifi facility, banking, ATM and post office facilities.
Sports facilities are also marvelous on the campus. Badminton, Athletics, Rowing, Tennis, Swimming, Hockey, Cricket, Squash, Gymnastics, Football, Basketball, Yoga, Volleyball, Kho Kho, Table Tennis, and Weight Lifting are the major sports here. The college organizes an Annual Athletic Meet to encourage the students towards physical and mental health.
There is a hobbies club on the campus with disciplines like photography, electronics, fine arts, gardening, modeling section, philately, star gazing, and software development section to provide students with some relaxation from a highly competitive environment. Apart from this, the UG Club is located in the heart of campus and is a major stress buster for students after hectic workloads and tutorials. Students can fancy themselves various indoor games like Billiards, Snookers, Table Tennis, Pool, Carrom, Foosball.
The campus has an Information Management Group, NCC, NSS, Sharing Analysis of Regional Economics (ShARE), Sanskrit Club, and Spic Macay. The cultural council comprises Dramatics Section, Choreography Section, Programme Management Section, Audio Section, Light Section, Music Section, Literary Section, Watch Out, Kshitij, and Cinematic Section.
Cognizance is the Annual Technical Festival of IIT Roorkee. It is the conjugation of some of the finest technical minds in the country with a platform for them to promulgate their skills and aim to reach the pinnacle of their talents. Thomson is the cultural festival while Sangram is the sports festival.
There are 21 academic departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities & social sciences, and management programs, 1 academic center, 3 centers of excellence, 5 academic service centers, and 3 supporting units on the campus. For engineering and applied sciences, there are Architecture and Planning, Applied Science and Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Earth Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Communication Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Hydrology, Hydro, and Renewable Energy, Management Studies, Mathematics, Mechanical, and Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Paper Technology, Polymer and Process Technology, Physics, Water Resources Development and Management. Under Sciences, there are Chemistry and Mathematics departments. Management Studies and Humanities and Social Studies come under the department of Business and Humanities respectively. Under the Centre of Excellence, the university provides Centre of Nanotechnology, Centre for Transportation Systems, Centre of Excellence in Disaster Mitigation and Management. Mahatma Gandhi Central Library, Continuing Education Centre, Institute Computer Centre, Institute Instrumentation Centre, Intellectual Property Rights Cell, and Quality Improvement Programme come under Academic Service Centre. Educational Technology Cell and Institute Hospital come under Supporting Service Centre.
The BE/BTech courses are available in Industrial Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Production Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Communications Engineering, Control Systems, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation Technology, Microelectronics, Polymer Technology, Power Engineering, RF and Microwave Engineering, Structural Engineering, VLSI Design, and Biotechnology Engineering. The admission in these courses is based on the scores of a candidate in JEE-Advanced after successfully qualifying JEE-Mains. The total fees range between 8.5 to 13 lakhs. The closing cutoff for Computer Science and Engineering is 422 in 2020.
B. Arch. is a five-year course whose admissions are based on the candidate’s score in JEE-Advanced, NATA or AAT. It costs around 11 lakhs.
IIT Roorkee has a placement of 80%. Microsoft, Google, Accenture, JP Morgan Chase & Co, reliance, Uber India, Genpact, IBM India, Mahindra & Mahindra are its main recruiters. The highest international package was 1.5 crores while the highest domestic package was 47 lakhs per annum.
